The Issue

We call upon Governor Spencer J. Cox to veto UT SB 73, a bill that imposes unjustified financial burdens on citizen-initiated ballot measures. UT SB 73 demands the full text of any citizen-initiated measure be printed in every county's newspaper for two consecutive months before the election, increasing the overall cost by an estimated $1.4 million. It additionally compels supporters to fund a complete fiscal analysis while making it more feasible for the lieutenant governor to singularly discard a citizen-initiated statute. This legislation seriously hampers the community's ability to participate effectively in the democratic process, as its high costs could discourage many from proposing new initiatives. We believe it infringes on our democratic rights to shape the laws of our state directly. Consequently, Governor Spencer J. Cox, we urge you to stand against these obstructions to citizen participation and reject UT SB 73. Sign this petition to ensure all voices remain heard in our democracy.
