Up to 12.7 million tonnes of plastic enter our oceans every year - global production of plastics has increased to 380 million tonnes in 2015 from 2.3 million tonnes in 1950 (Source: Jambeck et al., 2015 & Geyer, Jambeck, and Law, 2017). We need immediate action to avoid the potential of this growing literally. Therefore, I urge governments and corporations to reduce the use of single-use plastics and to heavily invest in promoting sustainable alternatives. This is not only an environmental issue, but a fight for the survival of our marine species, for the preservation of our breathtaking seas and for the sake of ensuing generations.
