Urge government to extend tobacco sale timeline
Urge government to extend tobacco sale timeline
The issue
The issue
Running a legitimate retail business has its own challenges, and for those of us who adhere strictly to the rules, these challenges can often feel like an uphill battle. My store prides itself on selling only legally approved tobacco and cigarette products, rejecting any involvement with black market items such as illegal cigarettes or vapes. However, the rise in illicit trade has severely impacted our sales, leaving us unable to meet our projected sell-out timelines for our current stock.
We face a looming deadline: the current legislation requires us to sell our existing packages by the end of June. With the adverse effects of illegal trade, this deadline translates into potential financial losses for many responsible retailers like myself, who have been committed to ensuring every product sold is fully compliant and safe for consumers.
A six-month extension on the current timeline would provide a critical lifeline, allowing us sufficient time to clear existing stock in a manner that aligns with lawful practices. It would also serve as a buffer, ensuring that we can adjust sales strategies and recover from the unexpected dip in sales due to unregulated market activities.
This extension is not just about serving the needs of law-abiding businesses; it's an essential step towards stabilising a market increasingly affected by illegal sales. By granting additional time, the government can support legitimate businesses in overcoming temporary hurdles posed by illicit trade, thus reinforcing law and order in the economic arena.
We ask for your understanding and support in urging the government to recognise this challenge and to favorably consider this petition. Sign to support not only the rights and wellbeing of lawful businesses but also to stand against the growing threat of illicit trade in our communities.
