Urge Google to drop 24-hour delay on Android APK sideloading
Urge Google to drop 24-hour delay on Android APK sideloading
The Issue
As a developer, the new 24-hour delay imposed by Google on sideloading Android APKs is detrimental to my daily workflow. This flawed policy is touted as a measure to combat scammers but, in reality, it only hinders those of us who are passionate about developing and distributing apps independently. Scammers who are determined enough to walk users through enabling Developer Options merely have to call back the next day to complete their scheme. Thus, this delay serves little purpose in thwarting scams while severely impacting the efficiency of honest developers.
If an Android user has taken the deliberate step to enable Developer Options, it is evident that they are aware of and accepting the risks. Therefore, subjecting such users to a 24-hour waiting period is unnecessary and punitive. It does not enhance security as intended but rather creates an unnecessary hurdle in a developer's creative process.
Moreover, this policy seems to push developers towards Google's Play Store, further entrenching its monopoly. Independent developers rely on being able to quickly test and distribute apps outside the Play Store framework without additional barriers. Google should first clean its own Play Store, which has not been immune to scams, rather than penalize external developers.
Join me in urging Google to reconsider this policy. It’s crucial for fostering a healthy and innovative development community. Let’s stand together to promote a fair and efficient ecosystem for developers and users alike. Please sign this petition to help urge Google to eliminate the 24-hour delay for sideloading APKs when Developer Options are enabled.
