Urge Georgia Tech to implement clear and fair CPT policies
The Issue
I am an international student at Georgia Tech pursuing a Master of Science in Computer Science, with plans to graduate in 2028. I recently discovered that the procedures for Curricular Practical Training (CPT) at Georgia Tech are under review. The lack of clarity and swift action in this process could result in countless international students, like myself, missing out on crucial internship opportunities, which are fundamental to our educational and professional development.
Curricular Practical Training is an essential component of education for international students in the United States. It allows us to gain practical experience in our field of study through internships, which not only enhances our learning but also prepares us for future careers. However, without a well-defined and timely CPT policy, we find ourselves in a precarious position where our ability to secure internships is jeopardized.
Georgia Tech is widely recognized as a leading institution in innovation and technology, attracting talented students from around the globe. It's crucial that the Institute adopts a CPT policy that aligns with the legal standards while also supporting the academic and professional growth of its international student body. This involves not only clarifying existing procedures but also updating program requirements to acknowledge and incorporate supervised internships wherever academically appropriate.
Consider the facts: international students contribute significantly to the vibrant, diverse, and innovative community at Georgia Tech. We bring unique perspectives and talent, which enrich the university and its programs. Denying us equal access to internships could not only hinder our individual progress but could also diminish the diverse pool of talent on which Georgia Tech prides itself.
Furthermore, according to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, international students contribute more than $41 billion annually to the U.S. economy. At Georgia Tech alone, they represent a substantial portion of the academic community, pursuing excellence and driving innovation forward. Ensuring a transparent and supportive CPT environment is not only ethically sound but also economically beneficial for the university and the nation.
I urge Georgia Tech to take immediate and thoughtful action. By implementing a clear, consistent, and lawful CPT policy – and where possible, adjusting program requirements to accommodate relevant internships – the university can affirm its support for international students and their future careers.
Please join me in calling on Georgia Tech to uphold its commitment to providing all students with fair access to essential career opportunities. Sign this petition to ensure that international students have the clarity and support they need to thrive.
