Urge Georgia General Assembly to stabilize rural healthcare
The Issue
Two years ago, I relocated to Georgia with hope and optimism, only to face the harsh reality of a crumbling healthcare system. The struggle began immediately with my search for psychiatric care to continue managing my ADHD and other mental illnesses effectively—a search fraught with waiting lists and uncertainty. My move led me away from my established supportive care network in Boston, and I have since been unable to find reliable gastrointestinal care for my Crohn’s Disease. I know firsthand the challenges that come with disrupted healthcare, and I am now channeling my frustration and experiences into becoming a therapist. I want to contribute to solving the severe shortage of resources affecting families and individuals like me across Georgia and the broader American South.
Rural healthcare in Georgia is particularly hard hit, with facilities strained by a lack of resources, talent, and infrastructure. Critical hospitals in rural areas risk closing due to financial pressures, leaving communities without access to essential medical services. This situation not only compromises patient care but also threatens the wellbeing of our state's most vulnerable populations who depend on these facilities.
Georgia ranks among the lowest in the United States for retaining medical talent, significantly affecting the quality of care. The American Journal of Medicine reports that states with robust rural healthcare systems see higher rates of talent retention. Increasing incentives for medical professionals to work in rural Georgia could stabilize the workforce and ensure continuity of care. Enabling professionals like me to train and work in Georgia can have a long-lasting impact on the healthcare system.
Moreover, medication continuity is a critical issue. Patients with chronic conditions depend on consistent availability of their medications to manage their health effectively. Intermittent access or changes in prescriptions can lead to medical emergencies, exacerbating existing health problems.
I urge the Georgia General Assembly to act swiftly to rectify these issues. Legislating increased funding for rural healthcare infrastructure, creating incentives for medical professionals, and ensuring medication supplies are stable and uninterrupted can transform the lives of countless Georgians.
Please sign this petition to support improved healthcare access and outcomes across Georgia's rural communities. Together, we can advocate for a healthier, more equitable future for all residents of the Peach State.
