Urge Food Services to Reduce Their Use of Plastic Containers and Utensils
The Issue
I am deeply concerned about the environment, and it's disheartening to see my generation at risk of inheriting a world damaged by choices we can control. One such choice is the excessive use of plastic containers and utensils by food services. These plastics not only contribute to environmental pollution but also pose a significant health risk.
Studies show that humans are consuming an alarming amount of microplastics, tiny particles that can enter our bodies through the food we eat or the water we drink. According to a study published in Environmental Science & Technology, an average person could be ingesting approximately 5 grams of plastic every week - equivalent to the weight of a credit card (Koelmans et al., 2019). This ingestion has been linked with increasing health problems such as cancer.
Food services have a crucial role in this issue. By minimizing their use of plastic containers and utensils, they can significantly reduce plastic waste and our exposure to microplastics.
We must act now for the sake of our environment and future generations. We urge all food services to take responsibility for their part in this global issue by reducing their reliance on single-use plastics.
