Urge Flower Mound Town Council to reject 24/7 Total Care ER on FM 1171 & Fireside Dr
The Issue
As committed members of the Flower Mound community, my neighbors and I are deeply concerned about the proposed development of a 24-hour emergency room in our neighborhood. The Total Care ER is planned to be situated at a shopping center near the corner of FM 1171, Fireside Drive, and Arrowhead Drive, and while the concept will be presented to the Flower Mound Town Council, it has already faced opposition from the town’s Planning & Zoning Commission.
The proposed emergency room aims to operate round-the-clock, necessitating a specific use permit for overnight operations. While the provision of emergency medical care is vital, the introduction of this facility at the suggested location raises several valid issues that cannot be overlooked. Neighbors who have been vigilantly monitoring developments in this area are concerned by the potential impact on our community’s quality of life.
Firstly, the resulting traffic increase will likely affect the safety and travel of local residents, especially given the entrance of the proposed facility is situated on a side street. As has been raised in prior town council discussions of this location, the current location is located on a dangerous intersection where those headed West bound must either make a left turn with visibility restricted by the curve, make a U turn or, as is the case today, cut through neighborhoods to get to Morriss Rd. This already difficult left turn scenario will be made worse by FM 1171 traffic turning left to enter. This traffic pattern poses dangers to those who live and play in the surrounding areas and makes the intersection more dangerous for residents who use this corridor to travel to and from their homes. Placing an ER in this location turns that into 24/7 problem and exacerbates the risk by putting emergency traffic into that already problematic intersection.
Moreover, the noise pollution generated by a 24/7 medical facility could become a significant disturbance. Sirens from ambulances, increased vehicle traffic, and the general hustle associated with emergency medical care operations especially during late evening hours would disrupt the peace and tranquility we've grown to cherish in our homes.
Additionally, the light pollution from a facility operating all through the night would be incongruent with the residential nature of our neighborhood including from vehicle headlights exiting the facility at all hours pointed in the direction of homes in the surrounding neighborhood.
While we recognize the importance of accessible emergency medical services, we urge the Flower Mound Town Council to consider alternative locations for such a facility. Locations closer to existing medical infrastructure or on less residentially dense thoroughfares might provide a more suitable environment for the demands of a 24-hour emergency service, while preserving the safety and serenity of residential communities.
We appeal to the Town Council to carefully review these concerns and take action to protect the interests of Flower Mound residents in the neighboring community. We urge the representatives of Flower Mound to decline the specific use permit application for Total Care ER and seek alternative solutions that fulfill the medical needs of our community without compromising our living standards.
Please support our endeavor to maintain the quality and safety of our neighborhood by signing this petition to reject the development of the proposed 24-hour emergency room in our community.
