Urge European governments to cut ties with Islamic Republic of Iran

Urge European governments to cut ties with Islamic Republic of Iran
The Issue
The situation in Iran has reached a critical and irreversible point. For decades, the Iranian people have persistently demanded freedom, dignity, and fundamental human rights. These demands have been met not with reform, but with systematic repression, mass arrests, torture, and the brutal killing of peaceful protesters by the Islamic Republic of Iran (IRI). This pattern of violence is not episodic; it is structural and deliberate.
The Iranian regime’s sustained campaign of suppression against its own citizens—men, women, and even children—constitutes grave and ongoing violations of human rights. Peaceful demonstrators, journalists, activists, and ordinary citizens have been murdered simply for demanding basic freedoms. These crimes are not an internal matter of governance; they represent a clear threat to international human rights norms and undermine global peace and security.
For decades, the notion of “internal reform” has repeatedly proven illusory. The ruling system has shown neither the will nor the capacity to reform itself. Meaningful change in Iran can only occur through the weakening of the regime by sustained internal resistance combined with decisive external pressure. History demonstrates that authoritarian regimes do not relinquish power voluntarily; they are compelled to do so when internal demands for freedom are reinforced by firm international action.
The European Union, founded on the principles of human rights, rule of law, and human dignity, must act in accordance with its core values. European governments should immediately sever diplomatic relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran, including the expulsion of its ambassadors. Continuing normal diplomatic engagement with a regime responsible for widespread killings and repression legitimizes its crimes and emboldens further violence.
Cutting diplomatic ties would send a clear and unequivocal message: systematic oppression, state-sponsored murder, and the silencing of an entire nation will not be tolerated. Such action would weaken the regime politically and symbolically, strengthen the Iranian people’s struggle for freedom, and accelerate the possibility of meaningful change.
European governments have a moral and political responsibility to stand with the people of Iran—not with their oppressors. By signing this petition, you call upon European leaders to take firm, principled, and immediate action to hold the Islamic Republic of Iran accountable and to stand in solidarity with the Iranian people’s decades-long pursuit of freedom and human dignity.
