The situation in Iran has reached a critical and irreversible point. For decades, the Iranian people have persistently demanded freedom, dignity, and fundamental human rights. The European Union, founded on the principles of human rights, rule of law, and human dignity, must act in accordance with its core values. European governments should immediately sever diplomatic relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran, including the expulsion of its ambassadors. Continuing normal diplomatic engagement with a regime responsible for widespread killings and repression legitimizes its crimes and emboldens further violence.

Cutting diplomatic ties would send a clear and unequivocal message: systematic oppression, state-sponsored murder, and the silencing of an entire nation will not be tolerated. Such action would weaken the regime politically and symbolically, strengthen the Iranian people’s struggle for freedom, and accelerate the possibility of meaningful change.

European governments have a moral and political responsibility to stand with the people of Iran—not with their oppressors.
