The Issue

In 2022, my heart was set on adopting Elophy, a gentle soul from the Soi Dog Foundation in Phuket. Everything was in place for her to join our family when suddenly, a ban on the importation of rescue dogs came into effect. Elophy, who deserves a loving home, still lingers in the shelter, her hopes of experiencing life as part of a permanent family dashed. This weighs heavily on my heart, and the thought of her never experiencing the joy of a true home keeps me awake at night. Despite the odds, I cling to the hope that she can still join us one day before it is too late.

Edmonton's current restrictions prevent dogs from reputable international rescue organizations, like Soi Dog, from entering the country and being matched with loving families who are eager to welcome them. These restrictions fail to consider the extensive health and safety protocols that these organizations follow to ensure the wellbeing of these animals.

Globally, millions of rescue dogs live in shelters awaiting their chance at a happy and fulfilling life. In many countries, due to limited resources and overpopulation, these dogs face the risk of euthanasia or living entire lives within shelter walls. It's imperative to rethink and revise these bans, focusing instead on fostering partnerships with reputable rescue organizations that ensure the health and safety of these dogs.

Edmonton can take a leadership role by urging the CFIA to create a system of exemptions for organizations that meet specific health and welfare standards, allowing them to bring in dogs that have nowhere else to go. Let's advocate for policies that recognize and incorporate the comprehensive vetting processes these organizations already have in place. Furthermore, we can demand transparency and accountability by regularly reviewing the agreements and the practices of these organizations to ensure compliance and safety.

Every dog deserves a chance to be loved and to give love in return. Sign this petition to urge the City of Edmonton appeal to CFIA to revise its policies to allow rescue dogs from reputable organizations to find forever homes.
