Urge Edinburgh Council to Support New High School in Kirkliston Over Queensferry Extension
Urge Edinburgh Council to Support New High School in Kirkliston Over Queensferry Extension
The Issue
Edinburgh Council’s Education, Children and Families Commitee are meeting next Tuesday 25th March to vote on the proposal to extend Queensferry High School. We need to act now to make sure the council hear the voices of the local community on this.
As a concerned resident of South Queensferry I am alarmed by the plans to extend Queensferry High School to create a ‘super’ High School designed to fit 1800 kids. I am worried that the new extended QHS would be too big with a negative impact on the quality of education. This is in addition to the traffic impact on Station Road and nearby roads as well as the loss of parking at QHS. Kirkliston would also benefit from its own High School with new facilities, a closer community as well as this solution being a greener, healthier and longer term solution for Kirkliston.
The overwhelming majority of residents in both Queensferry and Kirkliston have made clear their opposition for the expansion of Queensferry High School. In the public consultation in 2023 98% of Queensferry residents and 78% of Kirkliston residents were opposed to this plan (>700 respondents). The community has instead shown considerable support for an entirely new High School in Kirkliston, a move that would distribute the student population and maintain the character of our towns.
Instead the Council have ignored public opinion and are due to vote on Tuesday to approve the extension of QHS. By signing this petition, you lend your voice to a cause that will ensure the welfare of our children and safeguard the essence of our community. We need to demonstrate to Edinburgh Council the level of opposition there is to the extension of Queensferry High School and call on them to revisit plans for a new Kirkliston High School.
