Urge Doug Ford to keep Speed Cameras in Mississauga

The Issue

Premier Doug Ford has announced that the Province of Ontario will be banning the use of speed cameras this fall. This is a dangerous decision making our roads around schools less safe for kids, parents, and other drivers.

In Peel Region, speed cameras have become an incredibly effective tool making our roads safer for both drivers and pedestrians. Recent statistics show that these cameras have contributed to a significant reduction in speeding incidents and, ultimately, road accidents. Clarkson Road South, one camera reduced average speeds by 14km/h and increased compliance with the law by 40%.

The safety of our communities should always come first. By reducing speeding and reckless driving, we are actively protecting our children, elderly, and all residents who use our roads.

However, the recent announcement from Premier Doug Ford tells us that the removal of speed cameras from school zones in Mississauga, Brampton, and Caledon is coming. This decision could reverse the progress we've made, placing lives at greater risk once again. Research from around the world continues to demonstrate that speed cameras are instrumental in reducing road traffic casualties. According to a study from Sick Kids Hospital, locations with active speed cameras witness approximately a 45% reduction in speeding and an 88% drop in vehicles traveling 20 km/h or more over the limit.

Eliminating speed cameras as a tool Peel Region can use is a step backwards in our mission for safer roads. Instead of removing them, there should be discussions on improving the program to ensure that all municipalities have a fair and unified policy on speed cameras.

Premier Doug Ford, we urge you to consider these facts and maintain the speed cameras in Mississauga, Brampton, and Caledon. Let's safeguard our roads and prevent unnecessary tragedies. Please sign this petition to show your support and keep speed cameras active in Mississauga for the safety of all of our neighbours.
