Inside Costco: My Free Sample Experience

One of the most common questions I get about Costco is: "Are the free samples really as good as people say?"
After visiting Costco Westgate in Auckland, I can confidently say that the free sample experience is one of the things that makes Costco stand out from traditional supermarkets.
What Samples Did I Try?
During my visit, I was able to try a wide range of products, including:
- Brownie
- Cinnamon Rolls
- Coconut Bites
- Strawberry Waffles
- Peakboo Red Pear
- Kiwifruit
- Vanilla Protein Milk
- Chocolate Protein Milk
- Lewis Road Lime Flavoured Milk
- Strawberry Nesquik Straws
- Chocolate Nesquik Straw
- Dried Shiitake Mushrooms
- Laughing Cow Cheese (served on a cracker)
- Sweetened Dried Mango'
- Unsweetened Dried Mango
- Thai Sticky Rice with Mango
- Freeze-Dried Fruit (Pineapple, Apple and Mango)
- Soybean Noodles
- Espresso Coffee Shot
- Ginger, Honey and Apple Juice
- Sweet potato sticks
- Museli bites
There were also several other samples available that I didn't get around to trying, including:
- Kewpie Mayonnaise
- Tegel Chicken Bites
- Chicken Flavoured Shapes
- Chicken Noodles
- Beef Sausages
- Louisiana Southern Chicken (Tegel)
- I also purchased Turkish Bread and Dinner Rolls during the visit.
The Costco Sample Experience
What impressed me most wasn't just the variety of food available.
The entire experience was incredibly clean, hygienic and professionally managed. The staff were patient, friendly and genuinely welcoming. They happily offered samples and there was no pressure or awkwardness.
In fact, I was able to try multiple samples and revisit stations throughout the day. The sample stations were operating from approximately 10:30am through to around 4:00pm.
That level of generosity is something I simply haven't experienced elsewhere.
Why It Matters
Guys, this really boosted the overall Costco experience.
I found myself wanting to stay in the store longer simply because the atmosphere was enjoyable. There was a real sense of energy, discovery and generosity throughout the warehouse.
Whether it was trying a new product, chatting with staff, or seeing what sample station was around the next corner, it turned a routine shopping trip into something much more engaging.
I couldn't help but notice the stark contrast with Woolworths, Pak'nSave and New World.
Those supermarkets don't offer anything close to this type of customer experience. Costco creates an environment where customers can discover products before buying them, and enjoy their time in-store.
The difference is noticeable.
Why Christchurch Needs Costco
If we can bring Costco to Christchurch, it won't just mean access to bulk products and competitive pricing.
It will bring an entirely different shopping experience.
For many Cantabrians, Costco would introduce a style of retailing that simply doesn't exist locally at the moment. The atmosphere, product discovery, food sampling and overall customer experience combine to create something genuinely unique.

Coming Next: The Price Comparison
In my next update, I'll be publishing a detailed itemised price comparison showing exactly how much I saved by shopping at Costco Westgate compared with purchasing the same products locally.
And here's the spoiler:
The savings covered all of my travel expenses to Auckland... and I still came out ahead & made a profit!
I'll release the full breakdown when the petition reaches 870 signatures.
