As Christchurch residents, we feel the pinch from high living costs. Groceries and clothing prices continue to burden us - a symptom of limited options and insufficient competition in our region. We're calling on Costco - a multinational corporation renowned for offering thousands of items at affordable prices - to consider opening a warehouse in Christchurch. The presence of a Costco warehouse would not only alleviate some financial pressure from local households by providing cheaper alternatives but also promote healthy competition in the retail sector of our city. Moreover, given that 61% of New Zealanders reportedly struggle with living costs (source: New Zealand Herald, Feb 2021), establishing a Costco in Christchurch would likely be a widely welcomed move, thus benefiting the corporation itself through a broadened customer base. It's time to diversify our market and offer the residents of Christchurch, and the wider South Island, the choice they deserve.
