Urge Connecticut to Prohibit the Use of Leghold and Body Gripping Traps

The Issue

Trying this again! On Christmas morning 2023, I discovered a beaver lifeless in a body gripping trap, illegally placed, an image that continues to haunt me. The trapper was made aware that they were set illegally and continued placing that way regardless, even with an email between myself and a biologist employed by CT DEEP stating that these traps were likely placed illegally - IN THEIR possession!! The proper authorities were provided  with these emails, as well as several photographs with the traps illegally placed, and also made aware that the responsible parties were in possession of these communications (confirmation of transmission also provided). Even with that, the enforcement of these regulations in this scenario was basically nonexistent. It became VERY clear that more needs to be done.

When an animal becomes trapped in a body-gripping trap, its fate can be agonizing and filled with immense suffering. Many times these animals aren’t killed immediately and unable to free itself, the animal may endure excruciating pain from broken bones, torn muscles, and deep lacerations. The prolonged struggle and fear amplify its distress. In moments of sheer agony, some animals find themselves confronted with a haunting choice: to endure the excruciating pain or to sacrifice a part of themselves. It is heart-wrenching to contemplate the sight of an animal, driven by instinct and a primal will to survive, resorting to the unthinkable act of chewing off its limb. This harrowing end is a stark reminder of the cruelty and inhumanity inflicted upon innocent creatures caught in these traps.

These traps are not only cruel but often used irresponsibly. Again, as in this case, even though a wildlife biologist employed by the state couldn't confirm with certainty due to lack of scale, he agreed, as he understands the regulations, it was likely placed illegally. The person responsible was made aware of and also sent these communications with the biologist and chose to continue the placement. This animal was killed in an illegally placed trap and nothing happens. Those that oppose bans on these types of traps often say that CT has some of the most strident trapping regulations. WHAT GOOD ARE REGULATIONS IF THEY AREN’T BEING ENFORCED??? Even with the unpenalized regulations, these traps cause an excruciating end for these animals and need to be banned.

These traps are indiscriminate devices that pose significant threats to pets, humans and other non target animals who may accidentally encounter them.

It is time we take action against these inhumane practices. We must urge our lawmakers in Connecticut to ban the use of leghold and body gripping traps statewide. By doing so, we can prevent further unnecessary animal suffering and protect our community from potential harm caused by these dangerous devices.

Please join me in calling on the state of Connecticut to implement legislation banning these cruel trapping methods once and for all. Sign this petition today.
