Urge Congress to Support the Afghan Adjustment Act

Urge Congress to Support the Afghan Adjustment Act
The Issue
The Afghan Adjustment Act is a critical piece of legislation that was introduced to Congress on July 13th, 2023. This bipartisan bill would grant a path to permanent citizenship for tens of thousands of Afghans who fled to the U.S. after Kabul fell to the Taliban, including many individuals who have risked their lives to support the cause of peace and stability by working tirelessly alongside U.S. military forces, on diplomatic missions, and in non-governmental organizations.
As the U.S. withdrew from Afghanistan, 85,000 Afghan citizens were evacuated from Kabul to a third country where they underwent extensive vetting and screening. From there over 76,000 of these evacuees arrived in the U.S. and have since integrated into communities around the country (Source: National Immigration Forum). The majority of these people are eligible for refugee and Special Immigration Visa status, but they cannot receive these statuses because of the backups and the excruciatingly slow nature of the process.
Without legislative action like the Afghan Adjustment Act, these individuals face an uncertain future with limited rights and protections. This act would:
- Provide Afghan evacuees a much-needed path to permanent legal status in the U.S. by giving many Afghan refugees access to lawful permanent resident (LPR) status. This would provide much-needed stability to those who are stuck in legal limbo in the U.S.
- Expand eligibility for Special Immigrant Visas (SIVs) to Afghans who have put their lives at risk in support of the two-decade U.S. mission in Afghanistan and have been left behind are face danger in Afghanistan and elsewhere.
