Urge Congress to Reject the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA)

The Issue

Growing up as a member of the LGBTQ community was no easy journey. It was through finding people online who had similar experiences that I found a sense of belonging, understanding, and, frankly, life-saving support. It was this network of individuals, who shared their stories and offered guidance, that made my own struggles feel less isolating. Without the ability to connect with them online, I might not be here today.

The Kids Online Safety Act, or KOSA, might appear beneficial at first glance, with its promise to shield children from harm. However, it poses a serious threat to the very communities that provide invaluable support and connection to countless individuals, especially minorities. Hidden beneath its well-meaning exterior, this bill aims to stifle the voices of minorities, particularly those belonging to the LGBTQ community, and restrict access to content that offers different perspectives and experiences.

By allowing the government to dictate what is deemed 'dangerous,' the bill infringes on our constitutional rights to free speech and expression. This can lead to a slippery slope where any dissenting voice or minority opinion could be silenced under the guise of protection. Instead of blocking access to these essential online connections, we must trust parents to make informed choices for their children, rather than allowing the government to impose blanket restrictions.

The internet is a powerful platform for exploring identity, finding community, and accessing resources that may not be available otherwise. Legislating its content with a broad stroke undermines these opportunities and isolates the very individuals who need support the most.

Call on Congress to reject KOSA and protect our freedoms online. For the sake of community inclusivity and freedom of expression, it's crucial to prevent this bill from silencing the voices that bring understanding and support to those who need it. Please sign this petition to express your opposition to the Kids Online Safety Act. Let your voice be heard in defense of a free and open internet where diversity and differing opinions can thrive.
