#Rally4Transit: Congress Must Re-Commit to Fully Fund Public Transportation
0 have signed. Let’s get to 25,000.
For decades, Congress has supported funding for American public transportation. In December 2015, by a wide bipartisan margin, the U.S. House and Senate passed the Fixing America’s Surface Transportation (FAST) Act. This historic piece of legislation made a commitment to fund major transit projects through 2020.
But the Administration is now proposing to cut federal funding for American public transportation. Communities across the country have already made significant investments in key transit projects, and proposed cuts could stall or undermine these critical infrastructure improvements.
Public transportation generates economic benefits, attracts business development, supports job growth, relieves traffic congestion, and helps lift Americans out of poverty.
Proposed cuts in public transportation funding would jeopardize 800,000 jobs and $90 billion in economic output.
Please #Rally4Transit and join Voices for Public Transit’s petition to Congress, urging lawmakers to renew their historic commitment to American public transportation and reject proposed budget cuts. We also need to remind Congress to include public transit as a part of any new infrastructure initiative.
Federal funding is critical to improving and expanding American public transportation in communities across the nation. Congress made a commitment to public transportation with the FAST Act in 2015, pledging to fund public transit projects through 2020. I join with other Americans in applauding Congress’s historic support for public transportation.
I urge the members of the 115th Congress to deliver on their pledge, and renew their commitment to public transportation by fully funding the FAST Act and making investment in our public transportation infrastructure a key priority in ongoing infrastructure discussions. Specifically, it is important for Congress to include public transit as a part of any new infrastructure initiative.
Proposed cuts to public transportation, including a severe reduction of the Capital Investment Grant (CIG) program or elimination of the Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) grant program, must be rejected.
Proposed cuts to public transportation put 800,000 jobs at risk and could result in a loss of $90 billion in economic output. Public transportation projects provide numerous benefits to our nation, including:
Driving growth in the economy
Supporting business development in local communities
Relieving traffic congestion
Connecting workers and employers
Helping to provide a transportation lifeline for those who are not able to drive.
Mobility is critical to our nation’s economy and Americans’ way of life—and public transit plays a central role in mobility for everyone. For our nation’s future prosperity, please be a champion of public transportation funding and reject proposed cuts in the federal budget.
