The Issue

We, the residents of La Salle Street and our extended community, are facing a pressing issue that could alter the nature of our beloved neighborhood. A proposed cannabis dispensary is set to open at 121 La Salle Street, directly across from a residential mental health program in a quiet, residential area that hosts our cherished children’s Open Street events. We are gravely concerned about the implications of this high-security business in our community.

**Protecting Our Vulnerable Residents**
The location of this proposed dispensary raises serious concerns regarding its proximity to a residential mental health program. Residents in recovery could face increased challenges due to the dispensary's close proximity. It's not just an inconvenience; it's a significant risk to the health and well-being of these individuals who are striving to regain their footing in life.

Proximity to a Preschool

The proposed dispensary is also less than 500 feet from the main walkway leading to a preschool on the same street. There are strict rules around dispensary locations. Locations can be looked up on the OCM maps; however, the Children's Learning Center on La Salle in Morningside seems to have been left off the map.

**Impacting Our Community Hub**
La Salle Street hosts regular children's Open Street events, fostering a safe and vibrant environment for local families. The introduction of a cannabis dispensary threatens to disrupt these events with increased traffic, deliveries, queues, and potential public smoking incidents. Our community thrives on these events, which enhance the quality of life for young families and create a sense of unity. Imagine lines of customers extending onto the street, clashing with children at play and families enjoying Thursdays on La Salle Street.

**Altering Our Neighborhood's Character**
This quiet block has long been a haven for its residents—people who value the tranquility and safety it provides. Introducing a cannabis dispensary with a required high-security detail will forever change the face of our street. Noise, traffic, and heightened security measures will replace the peace and quiet that drew us to this neighborhood in the first place.

We need Community Board 9 to stand with us in opposing this proposal. By rejecting this dispensary plan, the Board can help preserve the unique character of La Salle Street and protect the vulnerable individuals who call it home.
