Urge Coles and Woolworths to Reconsider Meat-Centric Advertising in Public Campaigns

Urge Coles and Woolworths to Reconsider Meat-Centric Advertising in Public Campaigns
The issue
Every week, Australians see meat-heavy recipe promotions from Coles and Woolworths—whether in catalogues, social media, or "what to cook tonight" campaigns. While meat may still be part of many households, these ads ignore the rapidly growing number of Australians who are vegan, vegetarian, or reducing meat for ethical, environmental, and health reasons.
We call on Coles and Woolworths to modernise their advertising and stop promoting meat as the default dinner.
Why This Matters:
🔸 It's Exclusionary
Vegan and plant-based shoppers are loyal customers too. Constant meat advertising can feel alienating, even offensive, to those who choose compassion and sustainability in their food choices.
🔸 It's Distressing
For many vegans, the casual promotion of meat-based meals—especially featuring cuts of animals—can be upsetting. These campaigns normalise animal slaughter and ignore the ethics behind plant-based living.
🔸 It's Environmentally Harmful
Animal agriculture is one of the largest contributors to climate change, water pollution, and deforestation. Promoting more plant-based options is a small but powerful step toward sustainability—and both supermarkets claim to support this.
🔸 It's Outdated
Australia has one of the fastest-growing vegan populations in the world. Consumer demand for meat alternatives, plant-based recipes, and sustainable options is stronger than ever.
What We’re Asking For:
✅ Reduce or eliminate meat-centric recipes in advertising and weekly promotions
✅ Promote plant-based or neutral dinner recipes that appeal to a broader audience
✅ Clearly label and prioritise vegetarian and vegan meals
✅ Take meaningful steps toward inclusive, compassionate, and future-focused advertising
Supermarkets shape food culture. You have the power to promote not just what’s for dinner—but what’s ethical, sustainable, and inclusive.
Please sign this petition to let Coles and Woolworths know: it’s time to stop promoting meat and start leading the shift toward a kinder, healthier future.
