Urge Cobb County District Attorney to Dismiss Unjust Charges Against Andrew Nelms

1,262

The Issue

Andrew Nelms, a Northwest Georgia Paramedic who has dedicated many years serving the Cobb County community, is now facing serious, unsubstantiated charges that threaten his livelihood and reputation. His wife, Erin Nelms is a local schoolteacher and together they are a pillar of the community.

Mr. Nelms participated in a town hall meeting with Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene on April 15th. Upon expressing his dissatisfaction by shouting "boo", he was forcibly removed from the venue. Even after being restrained, the Acworth Police Department officers fired a taser at him. Subsequent to this, he was charged with battery of a police officer and obstruction of law enforcement – charges that lack corroborating evidence.

As a paramedic, a charge of a violent crime – even without a subsequent conviction – has dire consequences. It poses a serious risk to Mr. Nelms' professional license, thereby threatening his ability to continue his life-saving work. It's distressing that potentially groundless charges and an abuse of power by the Acworth Police Department could lead to such grave circumstances.

We appeal to the Cobb County District Attorney to expediently review the case against Mr. Nelms, given the lack of evidence supporting the escalated charges and considering his service to the community. His potential punishment is inexplicably disproportionate to his presumed "crime". An injustice against one is an injustice against all. Stand with us to protect our community heroes like Andrew Nelms from unwarranted prosecution. Sign the petition to have the charges against him dropped.
