Urge Charlottetown Council to Designate 93 King St. a Heritage Resource!

Urge Charlottetown Council to Designate 93 King St. a Heritage Resource!
The Issue
93 King Street (estimated c.1854 per City records), one of the rarer remaining examples of Georgian architecture in Charlottetown, may be at risk — again — of demolition.
Demolition approvals granted in 2019 and 2024 have expired although could be applied for again.
It is imperative that the City resume its role to protect these irreplaceable historic resources! Three of the five neighbouring buildings have already been demolished representing a loss of history and streetscape in Charlottetown’s 500 Lot Area.
The City has the power to impose a Temporary Heritage Designation while the building is more thoroughly studied for potential designation as a Heritage Resource. This is a Grade 2 property (total Heritage Score of 75/100). The property has a maximum Setting/Streetscape score of 15/15 per city records.
In addition to the inherent value of this pre-Confederation building, is the need to maintain buffer zones around important buildings such as the neighbouring Designated Heritage Resource, the “Bishop’s Palace” (visible in the background of the photo).
More importantly, the Heritage Officer’s own 2019 report stresses the value that restoring these buildings would bring to the streetscape in this part of Charlottetown’s 500 Lot Area and the loss were they demolished.
....“Although, it is believed these buildings could potentially all be restored and contribute to the authenticity of the character of the area, it is perhaps the loss in terms of loss to the streetscape which presents the greater concern.
The removal of two neighbouring buildings on both streetscapes and construction of a new development results in a totally new streetscape on King Street and half the block on Dorchester Street.” ....
To date, no plans for what is to replace these buildings have been made available to the public.
Show Charlottetown City Hall that we value our heritage resources and encourage them to designate 93 King Street!
