The Issue

Growing up in the scenic surroundings of Boca Grande has been a cherished part of my life and the lives of many from the nearby regions. My family and I have spent countless weekends and family staycations relishing the welcoming sands and warm community. However, the recent vote by Boca Grande residents on the 4th to restrict access to their beaches feels like an unexpected and unkind move, severing our longstanding connection to this beautiful place.

Boca Grande’s decision to restrict beach access to non-islanders has the potential not just to break the hearts of many who have fond memories there, but also to significantly hurt the small businesses that rely on tourism and visitors. These businesses, from quaint shops to family-owned restaurants, add a special charm to the island that complements its natural beauty. By closing off the beaches, Boca Grande risks its economic health and the livelihoods that depend on a steady stream of visitors.

While Boca Grande moves towards exclusivity, it is important to highlight the support they receive from Charlotte County. This includes essential services such as landfill use, mosquito control, and emergency personnel assistance. It raises the question of fairness: should Boca Grande expect the continued support of these services when they have chosen to shut their doors on the supportive neighboring communities?

This petition seeks to urge Charlotte County to reconsider its support to Boca Grande until a more inclusive decision is reached regarding access to the beaches and community resources. By re-evaluating the services extended to Boca Grande, we aim to encourage a more reciprocal relationship that honors the shared history and mutual benefits both the island and the surrounding communities have enjoyed.

Your signature can bring us one step closer to a fair dialogue and balanced actions. Together, let's advocate for an open and welcoming Boca Grande. Sign this petition to ensure both equity and community are at the heart of regional decisions.

The Decision Makers

Bill Truex
Charlotte County Commission - District 3
Responded
Good day and thank you for your email. I continue to work with a few Lee County Commissioners, a state representative, a local staff member of Governor DeSantis and a long time member of Boca Grande. The BCC as a whole has taken a stance against this ordinance and I have asked for the County Attorney to file for Injunctive Relief with the appropriate court. Additionally, in my conversations with one Lee County Commissioner I have received confirmation that a Reconsideration will be taking place. The people truly affected by this goes beyond those that cannot spend a day at the beach. The South Beach Restaurant owner indicated that their summer business is down 30% and stores are going multiple days with no visitors at all. I have also learned that Lee County Staff has had nothing to do with the ordinance and I hear they are not happpy about it. I also know that the ordinance was written by a private land us attorney on behalf of a part time resident. This is truly disappointing and hurtful in the Free State of Florida where people are trying to close off beach access to residents and visitors. I and my fellow board members are preparing to continue to fight for the freedoms we should all be able to enjoy and that includes a day at the beach, not just a couple of hours. Kind regards, Bill Truex Charlotte County Commission
