Urge Chancellor Syverud to Protect SU Students Rights

Urge Chancellor Syverud to Protect SU Students Rights
The Issue
Syracuse University, with a legacy steeped in student activism, has a fundamental responsibility to protect the rights of its student body. From the Vietnam War protests in the 70s, through the fight against apartheid in South Africa in 1985, to the #NotAgainSU campaign in 2019, the school's history is a testament to the importance of freedom of speech and assembly on campus. Yet, the troubling trend of targeted attacks by U.S Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) on student protestors across US college campuses by the federal government has raised concerns among our community.
It is for this reason that we call on Chancellor Kent Syverud to publicly affirm that Syracuse University will guard all student's right to freedom of speech and peaceful assembly without the menacing prospect of involving ICE. We demand that Syracuse University not endorse or collaborate with the targeting of student protestors by ICE. This assurance is fundamental to the University's commitment to inclusivity and respect for every student, irrespective of immigration or citizenship statuses.
A powerful statement from the Chancellor will send a signal of support to the student community, fostering a safe and welcoming environment for all. It is the University's ethical obligation to act as a stronghold for its students in times that threaten their basic civil liberties.
We urge Chancellor Syverud to stand with us, to reassure us that Syracuse University remains a daring voice in defending its students' right to dissent and assemble. Students, parents, community members, and supporters, please sign this petition in solidarity with student protestors affirming their rights on college campuses. Let's remind Syracuse University of its legacy and inspire it to continue standing up for its students. We encourage you to share this petition and join our cause!
