The Issue

In 2009, I experienced firsthand the brutal reality faced by many foreign migrants and refugees in South Africa. My then-partner, who was Zulu and pregnant at the time, and I were caught in the midst of xenophobic violence. During this time, foreigners were being viciously attacked, some even burned alive, merely for being a perceived threat in the job market. Consequently, our son, born in Soweto and a citizen of Canada, South Africa, and Zimbabwe, was subjected to discrimination and slurs solely because of his name and heritage. I repatriated with my son to Zimbabwe before he turned one, then back to Canada seeking a safer environment. He is now 16 years old, and distressingly, little to nothing has changed in South Africa. The violence and brutality against foreign nationals continue unabated. These are HATE CRIMES!

Given this dire situation, I urge the Canadian government to take immediate action by ceasing the issuance of visitor visas and work permits to South African citizens. This gesture would serve as a powerful message denouncing the South African government's failure to protect refugees and migrants within its borders.

The statistics are alarming: countless reports highlight the escalation in xenophobic attacks and the government’s negligence in addressing or curbing these incidents. Reports from the Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International often cite that South Africa remains one of the most dangerous countries for foreign nationals. Yet, the South African government continuously dismisses these heinous acts, allowing the unjust victimization of innocent people.

As Canadians, we pride ourselves on promoting equality, justice, and tolerance. By taking this stand, we encourage and challenge other nations to adopt similar stances. It is imperative that we use our collective influence to advocate for those who are voiceless and suffering. We owe it to those who have been displaced, harmed, and whose only crime was to seek a better life, to press for an immediate and tangible resolution.

Join me in urging our government to act responsibly and ethically. Sign this petition to demand that Canada halts visas and work permits to South African citizens until concrete measures are implemented to protect foreign nationals. Stand in solidarity with those who dare to dream of peace and safety in a foreign land. Your signature can be the catalyst for change and a beacon of hope.
