Urge Canadian and Ontario government to deal with the 30 Beluga Whales
The Issue
When I see the 30 belugas at Marine Park Ontario, I can't help but feel a deep sense of responsibility. These magnificent creatures were stolen from their natural habitat and forced into a life that feels like swimming in a bathtub. They were made to entertain us and, in the process, have become dependent on humans. It's unfair, and we need to step up and ensure they are given a life of dignity and quality.
Belugas are intelligent and social creatures who belong in the vast, open waters of their ocean home—not in cramped pools where their natural behaviors are stifled. It is time for the Canadian and provincial governments to acknowledge the role they played in allowing this captivity to persist and take active steps towards rehoming these belugas.
In 2019, Canada passed Bill S-203, the "Free Willy Bill," which bans the captivity of whales and dolphins. This demonstrates a clear intent to protect marine mammals. Utilizing the goodwill fostered by this legislation, it's crucial that the government now takes further action in addressing the plight of these belugas.
An excellent option for their new homes are sanctuary environments that offer expansive space and the ability to interact with other marine creatures.
Organizations like The Whale Sanctuary Project are working to establish seaside sanctuaries. These locations can provide environments where belugas can thrive, reestablish their natural behaviors, and live healthier lives. However, time is of the essence as every day spent in captivity further impacts their well-being.
Let us hold both the Canadian and provincial governments accountable and prompt them to fund and facilitate the transfer of these belugas to sanctuaries where they can receive proper care.
