Urge Canada to reassess its stance on Iran's three islands
The Issue
TO: Prime Minister Mark Carney, Minister of Foreign Affairs Anita Anand, and the Government of Canada
ENGLISH VERSION
We, the undersigned, express our serious concern regarding the Canadian government's October 28, 2026 joint statement with the United Arab Emirates concerning Abu Musa, Greater Tunb, and Lesser Tunb.
These islands have a long history in the Persian Gulf, predating the establishment of the United Arab Emirates in 1971. Iran maintains its sovereignty over them, while the UAE disputes that claim. This historical and territorial dispute deserves careful examination based on historical records and international law, not political declarations.
We are particularly concerned that Canada has adopted the UAE's terminology of "occupation" without demonstrating an independent and impartial legal determination.
We call on the Government of Canada to:
- Clarify the historical and legal basis for its position.
- Reconsider the language used in its joint statement.
- Respect the importance of historical evidence and territorial sovereignty.
- Pursue a balanced and principled diplomatic approach.
- Engage with concerned Iranian-Canadian citizens and provide a formal response.
We are proud Canadians. Our citizenship does not require us to abandon our heritage or remain silent about issues affecting our historical identity.
We will not ignore this matter. We expect our elected government to listen, respond, and act with fairness and accountability.
History deserves respect. Sovereignty deserves fairness. Canada's foreign policy deserves accountability.
