Urge Canada to Protect Persecuted Transgender Americans

Urge Canada to Protect Persecuted Transgender Americans
The Issue
🇨🇦 Petition Description: Urge Canada to Protect Persecuted Transgender Americans
In the United States, transgender Americans face an alarming surge in state-sponsored persecution. Over 500 anti-LGBTQ+ bills were introduced in state legislatures in 2023 alone, with many targeting gender-affirming care, trans youth, and freedom of expression.¹ These laws have created a chilling climate—where simply existing as oneself can be punished by policy.
Why This Matters to Me
As a Canadian who cares deeply about human dignity, I cannot ignore the stories of pain and resilience coming from across our border. I recently met Aria, a 19-year-old transgender woman from the American Midwest, online through a support group. She shared how new legislation forced her doctor to cancel her hormone therapy. Her parents, afraid of social backlash, threatened to throw her out. She spent nights hiding in a friend's garage to avoid being reported for “violating gender presentation laws.”
Aria's story isn’t isolated—it's echoed in communities across the U.S.
Why Canada Must Act
Canada has the moral and legal framework to become a beacon of refuge. Our Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees protection from discrimination based on gender identity and expression. The world knows us for our empathy, multiculturalism, and defense of civil liberties. We cannot sit idly by while trans people—especially youth—are forced into homelessness, trauma, and invisibility.
We're calling on:
Parliament of Canada to acknowledge this crisis as a basis for refugee claims
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada to prioritize and streamline asylum pathways for transgender Americans
Mental health, housing, and community organizations to be funded in support of trans newcomers
Relevant Facts:
An estimated 1.6 million people in the U.S. identify as transgender²
41% of trans people attempt suicide at least once in their lifetime³
Nearly 1 in 3 trans youth have experienced homelessness⁴
Canada can make a tangible difference. By offering sanctuary, we’re not only saving lives—we’re reaffirming the values that define us as a nation.
Add Your Voice. Support Trans Rights Without Borders. Because compassion should never be constrained by geography.
