Urge Brown University to cover victims' medical and funeral expenses
Urge Brown University to cover victims' medical and funeral expenses
The Issue
As a student at Brown University, I find myself grappling with an overwhelming sense of heartache and responsibility. On the day of the campus shooting, I was just another face among the students who call this campus home. The events that unfolded were not just an attack on the physical grounds of Brown University, but a terrifying assault on our sense of safety and community. While the scars of that day linger, I am especially moved to act, knowing my fellow students who were injured are now facing the additional burden of medical expenses.
The tragedy that occurred on our campus is devastating, affecting not only those directly injured but also their families, friends, and the entire Brown community. Each story, each family, and each student's journey to recovery only amplifies the collective pain we feel. The emotional toll is immense; however, we can alleviate one critical aspect— the financial strain from medical bills. We are coming together today with one unified plea.
We urge Brown University to take a compassionate stand and commit to covering the medical and funeral expenses incurred by those hospitalized as a result of this incident. As an institution deeply rooted in values of community support, empathy, and social responsibility, this step would offer much-needed relief to the impacted families and demonstrate unwavering solidarity.
Statistics demonstrate that the average hospital stay in the United States can cost thousands of dollars, not inclusive of follow-up care and therapy, which are often necessary for full recovery. This financial burden should not fall upon students and their families, especially in the wake of such a traumatic event. Covering these costs would allow the families to focus fully on the recovery and healing of their loved ones.
We are committed to working alongside the university to explore feasible options for funding this initiative, whether through university resources, alumni contributions, or partaking in fundraising campaigns that can engage the wider community. Efficient allocation of resources from the university's endowment, which is intended for such welfare initiatives, could also be explored.
Our aim is to relieve these families from the worry of financial obstacles during an already distressing time. We implore the university administration to listen to their stories, acknowledge their struggles, and take decisive action.
Please join us in calling on Brown University to cover the medical and funeral expenses for victims of this tragedy. By doing so, we stand together as a compassionate community, fostering an environment where students feel undeniably supported. Sign this petition to make a meaningful difference in the lives of our fellow students and their families. Let us show that in times of crisis, we stand united and resolute, championing empathy and support above all else.
