Urge Brookford PD to repeal the 287g agreement

Urge Brookford PD to repeal the 287g agreement
The Issue
I am reaching out to you today following a deeply concerning incident that happened within our Brookford, NC, community. A beloved member of our community was wrongfully stopped by the Brookford Police Department and subsequently handed over to Immigration Customs and Enforcement (ICE). This harrowing experience is not isolated; it is part of a larger systemic issue rooted in the 287g task force model agreement between Brookford PD and ICE.
The 287g program grants local law enforcement agencies like ours the power to perform immigration enforcement functions. This initiative, however, has proven to be counterproductive, fostering racial profiling and eroding the trust between immigrants and the police. In fact, studies have shown that municipalities with 287g agreements experience lower crime reporting by immigrants. They feel unsafe and targeted, resulting in a community that is not only divided but also vulnerable to higher crime rates.
Brookford, known for its diverse and vibrant community, stands to lose immensely under the 287g agreement. Families live in constant fear of deportation, tearing communal ties and disrupting lives. Our town's safety is compromised when residents are too afraid to report crimes or cooperate with law enforcement due to fear of immigration repercussions.
It is time to rethink and repeal the 287g agreement. Repealing it will not only uphold the rights and dignity of all Brookford residents but will also restore trust and cooperation between the community and law enforcement. We urge the Brookford Police Department to prioritize community safety and cohesion over immigration enforcement duties.
Imagine a Brookford where everyone, regardless of their immigration status, feels safe to call for help and report crimes. By eliminating the 287g agreement, we can create a more cooperative and trusting relationship between our community and the police.
Change starts with action. We need your support to stand up for our community and demand that Brookford PD repeals the 287g agreement. Please sign this petition and help us build a safer, more inclusive community for all.
