Call to action: Board Public Hearing will be held on Tuesday, Sept 15th

Tuesday, Sept 15th at 6:30pm at
RJAC- 335 W Wilson St, Batavia
The Board of Education will be holding a Public Hearing to receive public comment on the proposed waiver modification to IL School Code 105 5/27-710 Courses in Physical Education Required.
This is the community’s opportunity to ensure their voices are heard. You can sign up to speak or submit a written statement before the 6:30 start time. Please consider providing your support to ensure the following happens:
1. Students receive the State required PE time
2. The time for other specials such as Art, Music, and LRC are not reduced
3. Specials teachers receive adequate planning time to support the needs of students
4. At a time when so much expectation is placed on the students through this new curriculum, prioritize their well being and right to breaks and physical movement with their peers.
Why this is happening:
The District is applying to modify the requirements of Physical Education for elementary students from the State requirement of 3 days PE for every 5-day week. The District must hold a public hearing and submit a transcript of all oral testimony and any formal written statements with their application to the State.
Additional info: The District is citing several reasons for the modification request; transition to full day kindergarten, curriculum changes, fiscal constraints, recess requirements, and the accommodation of other specials. The current PE requirements have been in place since 2017. The District has known about and planned for the full day kindergarten transition since 2023. BPS administration is responsible for ensuring all requirements are met, while simultaneously ensuring our students are receiving access to an all-round education. This modification request does not provide accountability, a plan, or promise of change.
