Mr. Roque has made a habit of exploiting the democratic freedoms in Europe, using these liberties to attack political adversaries back in the Philippines. Living abroad should not grant someone the opportunity to derogate others without accountability.

Mr. Roque's actions are a threat to the fabric of democratic dialogue and highlight the need for responsible global citizenship.

In recent years, the Philippines has struggled with political polarization, and individuals like Mr. Roque, who sow seeds of division while benefiting from the protective cocoon of Europe's freedom of speech, contribute to widening this divide. A nation already grappling with its democratic ideals cannot afford voices that only serve to destabilize rather than unite.

With an arrest warrant issued against him and his co-respondents, the recent social activities of Mr. Roque, showing him partying and dining with Duterte supporters is tantamount to a middle finger not only to Philippine legal institutions but also to the alleged victims such as laborers and farmers who are seeking for his return for him to face the accusations in court. 

As a well-connected lawyer with active influence among the Duterte supporters, Mr. Roque's claim of political persecution is not only baseless, considering that he is free to criticize the current Marcos regime, which, in the first place, came to power with the machinations of the Duterte politicians themselves and their followers.

With a decision on his asylum filing already issued by the Dutch in June 2025, which directed him to Austria under the Dublin Regulation, the Dutch immigration authorities have completed their due diligence and have apparently found no merit to grant his request, even under exceptional or humanitarian conditions.

Furthermore, the European ethos of freedom, fairness, and justice is put in jeopardy by allowing individuals who are misusing their residency to fuel discord abroad. The presence of such individuals also conflicts with the values of peace and unity that Europe dearly upholds.

We urge European authorities to consider the impact of Mr. Roque's actions on both local and international audiences. It is time to set a precedent that demonstrates zero tolerance for those undermining the principles of democracy.
