The Issue

For many Angelenos, the Arclight Hollywood was widely regarded as the ultimate cinematic safe haven. As an avid movie lover, attending films there was more than just a pastime; it was a chance to immerse myself in top-notch audio and visual quality, surrounded by like-minded individuals who respected the unwritten rules of moviegoing etiquette. A huge part of the Arclight’s draw was its unique ability to allow audiences to lose themselves completely in the magic of cinema without interruptions. There were no latecomers allowed, and disruptive behavior during a screening was highly frowned upon and in some cases, grounds for ejection. These steadfast rules, while indeed strict, were part of the Arclight’s charm.

No theater franchise has been able to fill the void left by the Arclight Theaters’ citywide closures in 2020, but on July 22nd, 2026 there was hope that Angelenos may once again experience the warm embrace of the pristine cinematic experience they once offered. However, with the impending reopening of the Arclight Cinemas’ Hollywood location under the management and ownership of Sony/Alamo Drafthouse, there's a looming threat to the sanctity of this cherished experience: the prospect of in-theater dining. While dining at the movies might appeal to some, for those of us who value immersion and focus, the presence of food service during films is an unwelcome distraction. Servers scurrying to and fro, the aroma of meals, and the visual disturbance of people using their phones to place orders disrupt the very essence of what made the Arclight experience stand apart from other theaters.

Alamo Drafthouse, we appeal to your understanding of cinema lovers’ needs. Retain the integrity of the Arclight brand by preserving its character as a food-free sanctuary for film enthusiasts. If there is a need to incorporate dining into the experience, we urge you to consider alternatives such as enhancing the downstairs café space or expanding concession options for in-theater enjoyment.

The Arclight experience represents more than just a movie – it symbolizes a sacred space for full immersion in film. Let’s preserve its legacy for those who cherish the purity of cinema.

Support the cause to maintain Arclight Cinemas' no food service policy during films, and sign this petition to show your dedication to upholding high standards of moviegoing etiquette in Los Angeles.
