The Issue

Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS), it's crucial to reconsider the existing policies regarding single-sex spaces and girls' sports teams. Current policies that allow biological males to participate in girls' sports jeopardize the fair competition and safety that our daughters deserve. Allowing biological males into spaces meant for females can create discomfort and put at risk the privacy and safety of our students - allowing females into male spaces can do the same.

Furthermore, by not aligning with policies that recognize biological sex, ACPS risks losing federal funding that is essential for the development and improvement of our school systems. Title IX, a federal law that prohibits sex-based discrimination in schools, is designed to protect all students equally. However, its interpretation has been stretched, leading to potential conflicts in maintaining the integrity and purpose of women’s sports.

By adopting policies based on biological sex, ACPS would not only preserve the quality and fairness of school sports but also ensure that students’ safety and dignity are upheld. Recently, a number of high-profile cases in other districts have demonstrated that allowing biological males in female spaces has resulted in unequal competition, impacting scholarships and college opportunities for female athletes. Research indicates that biological males often possess inherent physiological advantages over biological females, including differences in muscle mass and cardiovascular endurance.

Protecting the integrity of single-sex spaces ensures a supportive and equitable environment for all students. Students should feel safe and supported at school, and part of that support comes from policies that respect biological differences. Allowing biological males into female spaces compromises these principles.

It's time for ACPS to lead with policies that are both inclusive and realistic. This means creating an environment where all students can thrive without compromising on fairness and safety. Please sign this petition to advocate for policy changes in ACPS that respect the biological differences that are fundamental to fair competition and safe educational spaces. Together, we can foster an educational system that champions equity and fairness for every student in Alexandria.
