Urge Aalborg Zoo to cease live animal donations

Urge Aalborg Zoo to cease live animal donations
The Issue
Many of my friends and I are devoted rabbit and Guinea pig owners, and the knowledge that our beloved pets could be used as food for zoo carnivores is not only upsetting but deeply disturbing. It's practices like these that have pushed me and many others away from supporting zoos entirely. To imagine creatures that provide joy and companionship to so many being used in such a brutal manner is heart-wrenching.
The Aalborg Zoo in Denmark has been soliciting donations of live animals such as rabbits, chickens, guinea pigs, and even horses to feed their resident carnivores. While we understand that carnivorous animals have specific dietary needs, sourcing food in this manner is starkly inhumane and unnecessary in our modern age. Instead of fostering education and conservation, this practice fosters fear and disconnect from animals who often serve as the first introduction to the beauty of wildlife for children and adults alike.
There are alternative, more ethical methods available for feeding zoo carnivores without resorting to such distressing techniques. Sustainable food sourcing options could include purchasing waste meat from certified humane sources that ensure the animals have lived under proper welfare standards. Zoos with significant public influence should lead by example and adopt practices that align with progressive animal welfare norms.
Fostering compassion, respect, and responsible stewardship towards all creatures should be the cornerstone of an organization's mission dedicated to preserving wildlife. We call on Aalborg Zoo to re-evaluate their feeding practices and consider the negative impact this solicitation has on their public image and community trust.
Let’s urge Aalborg Zoo to adopt more ethical practices in feeding their carnivores and to stop their appeal for live animal donations. Their request is only pushing the narrative that pets are disposable, and that's a very dangerous mentality, especially for our children. Sign this petition to stand up against this outdated and cruel method and advocate for the adoption of humane alternatives.
