Urban Decay Needs to Stop Glamorizing Addiction

The Issue

My son, Aidan, died from an opioid overdose in 2015. Since then, I've been advocating to erase the shame and stigma around substance use disorder (SUD). I am a fan of Urban Decay's makeup products, however, I am not a fan of their marketing and product naming strategy. I've tried to ignore product names like "Kush", "Uncut", "Laced", "Mainline", and "Junkie." But, today, I received an e-mail after placing an order and it said,"It just takes one or two hits to become a UD Junkie." This is your chance to revolutionize your product line and come up with something fresh, something that doesn't glamorize drug use and SUD. This is your opportunity to take a stand and raise the bar for corporate involvement. Over 192 people die from the drug epidemic every single day. Why make substance misuse sound stylish or fashionable?
