Uphold the Freedom to Offer and Receive Prayer and Spiritual Support in NSW
The issue
I, like many Australians, rely on spiritual guidance and support in my journey through life. To me, and countless others, prayer is more than a religious rite - it is a conversation with God. It is a source of comfort and inspiration, helping us navigate the challenges we face.
But today, our cherished spiritual freedom is threatened in New South Wales. The right to seek and provide pastoral care, even when it concerns sensitive topics like gender diversity or sexual orientation, is being scrutinised and potentially infringed upon by government oversight. This proposed infringement stands against the universal principles of religious freedom, respect for individual conscience, and personal privacy.
Australia, in its commitment to human rights, upholds religious freedom through the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) and the Australian Human Rights Commission Act 1986. The government must stay true to these commitments and respect the deeply personal and private nature of spirituality.
What is at stake here is far greater than a singular issue; it is about the essential right to seek solace in religious counsel, without undue coercion or interference. This is a plea to respect this fundamental right. This is a call to preserve the sacred space where individuals can converse with God as they see fit.
Join us in this fight for religious freedom. Sign and share this petition to urge the New South Wales government to respect and protect our right to spiritual support, regardless of the themes and topics covered. Each signature constitutes a voice refusing to let freedom be overshadowed by government oversight. Your voice matters.
