Uphold 'Gulf of Mexico': Preserve Gulf Coast Communities, Orgs, Businesses & Save Costs
The Issue
PLEASE REACH OUT TO THE US BOARD ON GEOGRAPHIC NAMES at BGNEXEC@usgs.gov IN SUPPORT OF KEEPING “GULF OF MEXICO”. They are the official authority on name changes and according to their website: The most important consideration is local use and acceptance. The individual (“the proponent”) proposing a new name or name change should try to solicit local opinions, such as from present-day residents of the area, local organizations, and historical and genealogical societies, and from the appropriate local, town, city, and/or county government(s).
As someone who has dedicated their life to connecting Gulf coast communities to the vibrant life of the Gulf of Mexico, I understand the immense economical value and community importance of preserving this name. It is not simply a geographic feature; it exemplifies a diverse ecosystem and important economy. The current proposal to rename it is not just dismissive of these contexts but also foments a divisive, xenophobic mindset.
The 'Gulf of Mexico,' as it is recognized today, is used extensively in reference and educational materials by numerous entities, ranging from a huge number of non-profit organizations to small and large businesses and government institutions. Estimates suggest that renaming the Gulf will cost millions of dollars in labor, reprinting of materials, online content revision, signage alterations, and name trademark changes amongst other expenses. This impending financial burden, being economically unjustified, also shows a stark disregard for the local communities, organizations, and businesses that have committed their resources and efforts to this region.
Furthermore, the 'Gulf of Mexico' is a marker of historical events and a multicultural mosaic that recognizes the contributions of our neighboring countries as well as our Gulf coast communities. Omitting 'Mexico' from the name seeks to strip away a significant part of its identity, a move animated by racism.
Our Gulf, emblazoned with its rich biodiversity and historic significance, deserves to keep its long-standing name. We must protect this identity from being erased and save our communities from an unnecessary financial toll. Thus, I urge you to join us in maintaining the name 'Gulf of Mexico', sign the petition, and contribute towards preserving our shared history and community.
