As an individual residing in India, I am deeply embroiled in a growing concern for the rapidly declining state of Freedom of Speech in our nation. A recent and highly significant example of this is when a comedy studio was brutally vandalized by members of Shiv Sena – a transgression that reverberates with the echoes of an oppressive regime. Well-known comedian, Kunal Kamra, was openly threatened by leaders within Shiv Sena, an event that illustrates a stark and worrying disregard for our Constitution.

Our Constitution does not permit wanton threats, however, it does give us the right to Freedom of Speech. As citizens, we must understand that being offended or perturbed by someone's words or comedy routines does not grant us the right to engage in violence or illegal activity. We cannot, and should not, take the law into our own hands. The law is there to protect us and our rights, not to be manipulated to forward personal or party agendas.

What is even more concerning is the abject failure of law enforcement to take appropriate action in the face of such crimes. If high-profile individuals, such as Kunal Kamra, can be silenced through fear, violence, and coercion, then we must ask: where does that leave the common man?

If the government becomes the arm that stifles voices rather than protects their rights to speak, it's a direct threat to our democracy. We ask for immediate action against those who violated the law and peace by attacking Kunal Kamra. Furthermore, we demand that law enforcement agencies act prodigiously to protect the constitutional rights of the citizens, starting with actions against those in Shiv Sena who were involved in this despicable act.
