Upgrade the Stairs on Spruce Street for Enhanced Neighborhood Connectivity

The Issue

The Spruce Street stairs, which connect Riverside Avenue and Spruce Street, serve as an important connector for the Browne's Addition and Peaceful Valley neighborhoods. These stairs provide access to restaurants and bus stops, including the new CityLine bus route, for Peaceful Valley residents, and they provide access to the river for Browne's Addition residents. Additionally, residents from outside these neighborhoods often use the stairs in walking routes to avoid the treacherous section of Riverside between the stairs and People's Park.

Unfortunately, the stairs are in egregious disrepair, with rotting boards and broken handrails, and the city has closed them. These stairs are important, and many people choose to sneak past the closed signs and use them because the alternatives are too onerous for pedestrians. The consequences of a fall are high, and many pedestrians are at risk.

We call on the City of Spokane to commit to replacing the Spruce Street stairs with a new staircase that better serves the needs of the residents and will last for a long time. Please sign this petition and call on our city to prioritize important pedestrian infrastructure.
