State Highway 1 is the lifeline connecting communities across New Zealand, and the section between Rolleston and Ashburton is crying out for attention. This major highway serves as a critical route for both commercial and personal travel; yet, despite its importance, it remains a single-lane hazard. With the current volume of multi-class vehicles traveling this stretch skyrocketing, especially during peak hours and holidays, the potential for devastating accidents increases by the day.

In its current state, this portion of State Highway 1 cannot safely support the traffic it bears. The road sees a diverse array of vehicles, from heavy goods trucks to family cars, each posing different challenges and hazards. The imbalances and inefficiencies are not just inconvenient; they are life-threatening. Statistics show that roads of similar stature, when left unimproved amidst escalating traffic, see a spike in accidents and fatalities. The lack of safe intersections and an adequate median barrier makes this highway section particularly perilous.

The need for immediate action is clear and compelling. We propose the expansion to a four-lane highway that incorporates safe, well-designed intersections and robust median barriers to ensure the safety and well-being of all who travel this route. This upgrade is not simply a matter of convenience or economic efficiency, but a necessary step to safeguard lives and reduce unnecessary risks faced by daily commuters and holiday travelers alike.

Canterbury deserves infrastructure that matches its growth and dynamism. It is unacceptable to continue gambling with the lives of our loved ones, friends, and neighbours. We call on the government of New Zealand and relevant authorities to prioritise this upgrade for the safety and future of the community.
