Upgrade or fix Dudley Street Charter School’s playground
The Issue
My name is Melissa LaBelle, and I am a concerned teacher at Dudley Street Charter School in Roxbury, Massachusetts. Every day, I watch my students and their classmates play on a playground that should be a place of joy and safety, but instead, it poses significant hazards. The playground is in dire need of renovations—cracked surfaces, rusted equipment, and a lack of adequate safety features have led to numerous student injuries. In fact, over the past year alone, there have been an handful amount of incidents, ranging from minor scrapes to serious injuries requiring medical attention from the school nurse.
Our school playground is the heart of our students' physical activity and a vital supplement to their education. It fosters not only physical health but also social interaction and creativity. Unfortunately, the outdated state of our playground doesn't meet the essential safety and recreational standards found in other communities. Dudley Street Charter School deserves a playground that promotes safety and growth—not one where parents fear for their children's wellbeing.
An upgraded playground is not an unattainable dream. We are asking for the support of the Boston Public Schools and our local government officials to prioritize the renovation of our school's outdoor facilities. According to the National Recreation and Park Association, children need safe places to play to improve health outcomes and enhance educational performance. An investment in our playground is an investment in our children's future.
We propose a plan to assess the current playground's shortcomings, followed by a practical renovation project that includes modern, safety-compliant play structures, secure surfaces to prevent injuries, and features that encourage inclusive play for children of all abilities. With proper funding and cooperation from school authorities and local agencies, we believe this transformation is entirely possible.
Your support is crucial to make this change happen. By signing this petition, you help us bring attention to this pressing issue and urge decision-makers to take immediate action. Let's ensure that Dudley Street Charter School’s playground becomes a model of safety and fun. Please join us in making our dream playground a reality for all our children by signing this petition today!
