Upgrade Napa City Parks with Sustainable Splash Pads and Natural Playscapes

The Issue

I am a resident of Napa, CA, and like many others in our community, I have noticed a lack of options for our children to escape the heat. Our parks are filled with dilapidated, environmentally unfriendly playground structures that not only contrast with the surrounding natural environment, but also look outdated and faded within a few years of being built.

Upon reading a recent article in the Napa Register about the six local parks earmarked for renovations, I was encouraged until I saw the renderings shown on the Parks and Recreation website. As a mom and homeowner, I just don’t see how these designs answer the needs and increase value in our communities for the long term. It's time we invest in sustainable and aesthetically pleasing alternatives.

Our city parks should be places where local and visiting families alike can enjoy themselves, even as temperatures rise, while appreciating the natural beauty of Napa. By renovating these spaces with splash pads and natural playgrounds that are coherent in colors, materials and design with the park environment, we can create sustainable recreational areas that stand the test of time.

Research and common knowledge indicate that parks play a crucial role in heat mitigation. Splash pads offer an effective solution to help cool down during hot summers while being water-efficient compared to traditional swimming pools (source: American Society of Landscape Architects). Natural playscapes made from materials such as wood, stone or recycled composites not only blend better into their surroundings but also last longer and look better longer than their colorful plastic counterparts (source: National Wildlife Federation).

Presidio Tunnel Tops (in SF) and Kingsbury Commons in Pease Park (in Austin, Texas) are just two examples of how to effectively integrate aesthetics and functionality into the natural landscape.

By signing this petition, you're supporting an initiative that will enhance the quality of life for all residents - especially our children who deserve safe and enjoyable outdoor spaces. Please sign this petition today to urge Napa city officials to renovate our city parks with sustainable splash pads and natural playscapes.
