Upgrade Buschman Park for Port Orange families
The Issue
Buschman Park in Port Orange holds a special place in my heart, as it not only provides a beautiful escape amid urban surroundings but also serves as a gathering place for our vibrant community. Despite its promising setting, the park lacks the essential amenities that could make it more inclusive for families, particularly those with young children. Our beloved park feels incomplete, mostly catering to older children with its limited equipment, leaving toddlers and younger children with little to enjoy.
Currently, the playground equipment at Buschman Park is designed for children aged 5 to 12, which poses a challenge for families like mine who have toddlers and younger children. We need age-appropriate and safe play structures that facilitate motor development through climbing, exploring, and playing. These early experiences are crucial for building skills that are foundational for their growth.
Equipping Buschman Park with swings, toddler play equipment, and safer environments for families would not only enhance the park's appeal but also encourage community engagement and foster a stronger, more connected neighborhood. Playgrounds aren't just for entertainment; they're places where friendships are formed, and families gather, enjoying quality time outside.
While recent investments have gone toward specialized amenities like the disc golf course, our community’s youngest children are being left out. Because the space lacks family-focused features, it often sits underutilized by local residents while suffering from littering and misuse.
Port Orange families deserve a clean, safe, and truly inclusive space close to home. We are petitioning the Port Orange City Council and Parks & Recreation Department to prioritize Buschman Park for much-needed upgrades, including:
Toddler-Specific Equipment (Ages 1–5): Safe, accessible climbing structures, sensory panels, and play areas designed for early childhood development and learning.
Classic Playground Staples: Swings for babies, toddlers, and older kids alike.
Family Amenities: A splash pad or shaded play area to keep children cool.
By signing this petition, you are telling the city that our children and neighborhood families deserve a high-quality, age-appropriate park where every child can play safely. Please sign and share with your neighbors!
Moreover, research indicates that inclusive play areas can improve children's physical health and social skills. The lack of suitable play options for toddlers at Buschman Park suggests an overdue need for upgrading the facilities to accommodate all age groups. With proper planning and community input, we can transform this park into a dynamic hub that welcomes everyone.
Let's seize this opportunity to advocate for a play facility that reflects our community's needs. By bringing swings, toddler play structures, and creating an all-around safer environment, we can make Buschman Park a model of inclusivity and fun for Port Orange families.
If you believe in enhancing our local parks and making them accessible and enjoyable for all children, please sign this petition. Together, we can work with local authorities to ensure Buschman Park becomes a vibrant and inclusive space that promotes well-being for all our children.
