For years, the intersection at Bridge Street and Greenwattle Street in Wilsonton, Toowoomba, has been a point of contention and frustration for residents and drivers alike. As our community has grown, so too has the traffic congestion at this crucial junction. Nearby homes have increased, the local state school continues to expand, and the Wilsonton Shopping Centre witnesses ever-growing traffic. Despite these changes, the necessary infrastructure upgrades for the intersection have lagged behind.

In late 2020, the intersection saw an upgrade, yet it fell short of expectations. Instead of installing much-needed traffic lights, only street lights were added, and the right turns from Greenwattle onto Bridge Street were removed. The U-turn facility at Bridge and Berry Street, near the state school, was introduced as a makeshift solution, which has done little to address the longstanding traffic woes.

The absence of traffic lights continues to be a safety hazard and a source of daily inconvenience for countless community members, including parents and students heading to and from school, shoppers, and local business patrons.

Since February 2021, I have been advocating for the installation of traffic lights at this intersection to improve traffic flow and safety, but the fight is ongoing. Now, more than ever, we need decisive action from Transport and Main Roads Queensland and the Toowoomba Regional Council to prioritize this upgrade. Traffic lights could significantly reduce congestion, enhance safety for pedestrians and drivers, and allow for the restoration of right turns from Greenwattle onto Bridge Street. We all have a voice to call on change on our roads and intersections including bridge and greenwattle St toowoomba.
