Update the United States Animal Welfare Act for healthier dog breeds
The Issue
I am ten years old and I absolutely love dogs! That's why it's so heartbreaking for me to see so many dogs today unable to breathe, run, and play comfortably. Many of them are bred with faces that are too flat, causing them serious health issues that could be avoided. This is why I am asking for us to update the United States Animal Welfare Act with two new laws that will protect dogs from this unnecessary suffering.
Our first proposed law is to establish a breeding standard that requires all dogs bred in America to have a snout that is at least one-third of their skull length. This change is not just about aesthetics; it is essential for the health and well-being of our furry friends. A longer snout significantly reduces the risk of breathing problems and other health issues associated with brachycephalic (flat-faced) breeds. To ensure compliance, we propose the use of legal DNA testing like Wisdom Panel or Optimal Selection, to accurately determine the snout length and help breeders adhere to these humane standards.
Not only will these laws help to ensure the health and happiness of future generations of dogs, but they also reflect a compassionate and responsible approach to animal welfare in the United States. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, brachycephalic breeds are more prone to respiratory distress syndrome, which can severely affect their quality of life. By making these changes, we are taking a stand to improve the lives of countless dogs across the country.
Please join me in calling for these much-needed amendments to the Animal Welfare Act. Together, we can ensure a healthier future for our beloved canine companions. Your signature can make a real difference in the lives of these innocent dogs. Sign the petition today to support healthier breeding practices and help every dog enjoy a life full of joy and play.
