The Issue

We, the undersigned residents of Tempe, request that the City Council and Community Enhancement Department revise the nuisance code to allow for long-term parking on legal, well-maintained circular driveways.

Circular driveways serve practical purposes for homes on busier streets, such as collector roads like Hardy Drive, where on-street parking is unsafe or prohibited. The current prohibition on long-term parking in circular driveways imposes unnecessary restrictions, despite existing codes that already regulate aesthetics, landscaping maintenance, and paved surfaces.

Updating the code to permit long-term parking in circular driveways would:

  • Alleviate congestion on neighborhood streets.
  • Support practical parking solutions as the city implements new ordinances, such as the allowance for accessory dwelling units (ADUs).
  • Encourage the use of off-street parking without compromising neighborhood aesthetics.
