Our current triple 0 system is outdated. Its not directly accessible for people who can not hear or speak.

In the past, we relied on the goodwill of strangers to make 000 calls on our behalf.  Now, we have the National Relay Service (NRS) making calls for us.  However, this method uses a middle person to relay conversations between the caller and the emergency operator.  It is slow and many Deaf people do not have good literacy skills to communicate fluently, thus, the middle person can misunderstand and distort our language to the emergency operator.  Its risky.

Further, pre-COVID times, Australia had over 5 million foreigners travelling in our country.  How many did not speak English?  000 does not include foreign people speaking other than English.

It is important for us to update our system to include all people of all walks of life to access the Emergency System.  Not just the English speaking people as well as engaging an intermediary or third parties into our dramas.
