The Issue

My children attend Oakridge Public Schools, and recently there have been worrying instances where social media platforms, such as SnapChat, have been used by school staff to contact students. This practice raises significant concerns about student safety and the appropriateness of such communications. I believe that communication between staff and students outside of school should be carefully monitored to prevent any potential risks or misunderstandings.

The current social media policy at Oakridge Public Schools allows staff and students to use social media as a means of communication. While this policy might have been created with good intentions, it fails to address the risks associated with direct messaging between adults and minors without oversight. Such interactions can potentially expose students to predatory behaviors, exploitation, or inappropriate relationships. Therefore, it is imperative to update the policy to ensure the safety and well-being of all students.

Statistics from the Crimes Against Children Research Center show that one in seven youth have received an unwanted sexual solicitation online. Furthermore, a report by the National Center for Education Statistics highlights that schools are responsible for protecting their students from both physical and emotional harm, including that which may occur online. These findings underscore the urgent need for Oakridge Public Schools to revise their social media policy.

To create a safer environment for students, we propose the following actionable solutions:
1. Restrict direct communication between school staff and students via personal social media accounts.
2. Implement clear guidelines and protocols for any necessary digital communication, ensuring it is conducted through official school channels, monitored appropriately, and transparent to parents.
3. Provide regular training for staff on the appropriate use of social media and recognize signs of inappropriate behavior.
4. Establish a reporting system for students and parents to flag any concerning communications or behaviors.

Updating the social media policy for Oakridge Public Schools isn't just about preventing potential incidents; it's about fostering a community where children feel safe, and parents can rest assured in their child's security. By signing this petition, you are advocating for the protection and safety of all students within the Oakridge Public Schools. Let's work together to make our schools a safer place for our children.
