Hawai'i has a great flag with rich symbolism that often goes underappreciated but is lacking in some areas and sometimes mistaken as a colonial symbol. For this reason, I have created a new redesign has that integrates the existing official Hawai'i flag with the Kānaka Maoli  symbol. This innovative design maintains the symbolism and strong visual appeal from the current flag while adding in new symbolism that explicitly represents the pre-European history of the islands, providing a more comprehensive representation of Hawai'i's heritage.

The current state flag was designed by Hawai'ian King Kamehameha I and adopted in 1845, featuring elements of both the American and British flags, symbolizing peace and strategic diplomacy. However, while the eight stripes represent the eight main Hawai'ian Islands, it lacks clear representation for the native Hawai'ian population or their history - an integral part of the state's identity. The Kānaka Maoli integrated in the design adds this much needed representation without forfeiting the historical (and surprisingly non-colonial) Union Jack, unlike most proposed redesigns floating around the internet.

While the existing Kānaka Maoli Flag is almost certainly not the original flag of Hawai'i as its "finder" claims, the Kanaka Maoli symbol used on the flag does have real, historical, cultural, and symbolic roots that are commonly associated with the islands, even amongst outsiders, representing the islanders' royal traditions and seafaring and Polynesian origins. 

This design honors provides a holistic account of Hawaii's history. By adopting this combined flag as our official state emblem, we can show respect for all facets of Hawaiian culture while promoting unity within our diverse community. I urge lawmakers to consider this proposal seriously and take steps towards its implementation, as a good Hawaiian flag serves as a symbol for unity among all residents in Hawaii.
